Johnston relieved; Hood given command
What happened
With Sherman's armies across the Chattahoochee and advancing (Thomas from Pace's and Power's ferries, Schofield with Sherman from Power's Ferry, McPherson from Roswell), Jefferson Davis replaced Johnston with Hood on July 17; the order reached Johnston's headquarters northwest of the city that night. Johnston had been setting troops into an outer line overlooking Peachtree Creek; at Hood's request he kept issuing orders until sunset the next day.
