What happened
Sherman, traveling with Schofield, made the J. Oliver Powell house his headquarters. Hascall's division (XXIII Corps) and Dodge's XVI Corps took Decatur after a fight with a detachment of Wheeler's cavalry, and Cox's division camped on the Paden plantation (today's Emory). Logan's XV Corps left Henderson's Mill at 5 a.m. and Blair's XVII came from Blake's Mill, both marching to Decatur by today's Henderson Mill, LaVista, Montreal and Lawrenceville roads.
