See it on the map All Civil War records

What happened

Stewart's and Cheatham's corps withdrew from the outer line to the city fortifications, and Hardee's four divisions (Cleburne, Maney, Walker, Bate) with Wheeler's cavalry started south out the McDonough road for a 15-mile night march around McPherson's open left. Govan's brigade received its order to move at 12:30. Garrard's cavalry, the only screen on McPherson's flank, had marched for Covington late on the 21st.
