Howard takes command; Stoneman rides from Decatur; Lee moves west
What happened
Howard assumed command of the Army of the Tennessee by the President's appointment; Hooker, passed over, resigned the XX Corps. Stoneman left Decatur for the Macon railroad with his three brigades (2,112 men, 2 guns) and Garrard's division, 'full 5,000 men' in all, sending Garrard to Flat Rock, 12 miles southeast, to cover his rear. McCook, with his own division and the new cavalry Rousseau had brought, was to meet him on the Macon road near Lovejoy's on the night of the 28th. In Atlanta, S.D. Lee took over Hood's old corps and moved Brown's and Clayton's divisions to White Hall (West End).
