What happened

Schofield's XXIII Corps, moved from the east side to the Federal right with Palmer's XIV Corps alongside, reached Utoy Creek on Aug 2 but did not cross until the 4th. The object was the two railroads entering the city from the southwest, which the Confederates were already covering with a new line.
