What happened

Federal troops crossed Utoy Creek on Aug 4 and advanced the next day with some success, but stopped to regroup, which gave the Confederates time to strengthen their works. Palmer's XIV Corps, marching from northwest of the city, lined up along the North Fork of Utoy Creek.
