What happened

Johnson's 1st Division, XIV Corps, marched by the Peyton road to the Henry Bankston house, where the 15th and 18th U.S. Infantry forced the crossing of the North Fork of Utoy Creek and the division camped south of it. Elsewhere a Federal brigade took an entrenched Confederate line and 140 prisoners at a cost of 83 killed and wounded. Bate's division used the pause to fortify its ridge with abatis and headlogs.
