Battle of Utoy Creek

See it on the map All Civil War records

What happened

At 8:30 a.m. Cox's division, with Reilly's brigade leading, crossed the Sandtown road (Cascade Rd) and attacked Bate's division entrenched on the wooded ridge to the south, including Lewis's Kentucky 'Orphan Brigade' and Tyler's Tennessee brigade. Two attacks failed. At 11:30 Hascall's division crossed South Utoy Creek against Armstrong's dismounted Mississippi cavalry, and a late XIV Corps supporting attack 'ended almost before it began'; the fighting was called off in a downpour. Hood, worried about his exposed left, then pulled Bate back to the main line.
