What happened

Eight 4½-inch rifled siege guns brought by rail from Chattanooga joined the bombardment; the Wikipedia account dates their arrival to Aug 10. They fired Schenkl and Hotchkiss shells, and Sherman's chief of artillery reported that four of them stood more than 1,000 discharges each at about twenty-minute intervals. The battery positions are not located here.
