See it on the map All Civil War records

What happened

Mayor James M. Calhoun and a committee of citizens rode out Marietta St and met a reconnaissance column sent from the XX Corps at the Chattahoochee. Col. John Coburn received the surrender on behalf of Maj. Gen. H.W. Slocum, commanding the XX Corps, and the first Union infantry marched in after noon. Sherman telegraphed from near Lovejoy's the next morning: 'So Atlanta is ours, and fairly won.'
