Special Field Orders No. 67: civilians ordered out

See it on the map All Civil War records

What happened

Sherman ordered that 'the city of Atlanta, being exclusively required for warlike purposes, will at once be vacated by all except the armies of the United States' and approved civilian employees. Mayor Calhoun published the order the same day; a state marker says notice to assemble for registration went out from City Hall, where the provost guard was camped. Between Sept 10 and 20 Col. LeDuc registered 1,651 people who went south: 705 adults, 860 children and 86 servants.
