Bate against Rice's brigade
On the far right of Hardee's corps, Bate's division swung west against Rice's XVI Corps brigade on the hill at today's Murphy High School and along the old Clay Rd (Clay St), and failed to dislodge it.
The record
Bate had three brigades of Georgia, Florida, Tennessee and Kentucky troops, including the five Kentucky regiments of Lewis's 'Orphan Brigade'. Rice's brigade of Sweeny's division held the high ground. Clay St and the Murphy High School hill are developed; school land is public.
