Battlefield burials of July 22–23 (Flat Shoals–Leggett's Hill front)
Under the July 23 truce the Army of the Tennessee buried or handed over hundreds of Confederate dead from the East Atlanta lines, many in shallow graves where they fell.
The record
Logan reported 1,000 dead buried and delivered in front of Leggett's division alone, 422 in front of the XVI Corps and 360 in front of the XV, 3,220 in all by July 24. After the war about 3,000 unknown dead of the 1864 campaign were gathered into Oakland Cemetery, and Union dead went to Marietta. No one knows how complete those reburials were. Any bone, coffin hardware or grave shaft found in this area should be treated as a burial: stop, leave it in place, and call the police or medical examiner.
