Brown's division attacks Logan's right
Brown's four brigades deployed here and made the first assaults on Lightburn's and Martin's brigades on the ridge to the northeast; Walthall's division later attacked over the same ground.
The record
From left to right Brown's brigades were Brantley's, Sharp's and Johnston's, with Manigault's in reserve. Brantley's Mississippians carried the log barricades of the 83rd Indiana but were swept back by a counterattack. Brown attacked a second time and then fell back, and Walthall's division tried again over the same ground about 2:30 with the same result. Much of the Ezra Church field is Westview Cemetery or city park, where there is no digging.
