City Hall square: provost-guard camp and evacuation notices
The 2nd Massachusetts, provost guard of Sherman's army, camped in the park around Atlanta's first City Hall, now the site of the Georgia Capitol.
The record
Atlanta's first City Hall (1853–1883) was shared with the Fulton County courts. During the occupation the 2nd Massachusetts camped in the surrounding park. From here the notice went out, dated Sept 6 on the state marker, for civilians to assemble for registration and removal under Special Field Orders No. 67. City Hall survived the November burning; the Capitol replaced it in 1884–89. State property: no digging.
