Hascall's flank attack across South Utoy Creek
Hascall's XXIII Corps division crossed South Utoy Creek to get around Bate's left and ran into Armstrong's dismounted Mississippi cavalry brigade.
The record
Strickland's and Swayne's brigades, with the 25th Michigan out as skirmishers, crossed the Sandtown road and made a fighting crossing of South Utoy Creek. They pushed the Confederate cavalry and two guns back a short distance, but no farther; the 2016 marker gives about 150 Federal casualties and says the 25th Michigan's colors were lost and recovered the next day. The threat to his flank led Hood to pull Bate back. Cascade Springs Nature Preserve is city land and surviving earthworks there are protected: no digging.
