Rough and Ready: the expulsion truce
Under Sherman's expulsion order, Atlanta civilians going south were carried by Federal wagons to a truce ground at Rough and Ready and handed over to Hood's army.
The record
Sherman proposed the removal to Hood on Sept 7 and ordered it on Sept 8 (Special Field Orders No. 67). Between Sept 10 and 20, 1,651 people were registered for removal south (705 adults, 860 children and 86 servants) with 8,842 packages of baggage. Wagons took them to Rough and Ready, where Hood was expected to carry them on. The old Rough and Ready community (later Mountain View, Clayton County) lies east of today's airport, just inside the map's southern edge; the point is only approximate.
