Stevenson's sector of the outer line
Carter Stevenson's division held this part of Atlanta's outer line east of Clear Creek, facing the IV and XXIII Corps, while the Peachtree Creek battle was fought to the west.
The record
Stevenson's troops were on the right of Bate's division, whose right rested on Clear Creek at Walker's (or Jones's) Mill near the north end of Piedmont Park. Cheatham's corps (Hood's old command) held this sector against Federal pressure from the north and east until it pulled back to the city works on the night of July 21–22. Piedmont Park land nearby is city park: no digging.
