Order of battle

  1. Aug 2–4Schofield's XXIII Corps (Army of the Ohio), with Palmer's XIV Corps, moved to the Federal right and reached Utoy Creek on Aug 2, but did not cross until Aug 4. The Confederates were building an exterior line southwest toward East Point, and Bate's division (Hardee's corps, attached to S.D. Lee) held a ridge west of it, south of the Sandtown road (today's Cascade Rd).
Units: US XXIII Corps (Schofield: Cox's, Hascall's divs), XIV Corps (Palmer). CS Bate's div; exterior line manned by Hardee's & Lee's corps 123
  2. Aug 5Johnson's 1st Division, XIV Corps, came by the Peyton road to the Henry Bankston house, and the 15th and 18th U.S. Infantry forced the crossing of the North Fork of Utoy Creek. Elsewhere a Federal brigade took an entrenched line and 140 prisoners at a cost of 83. The Federals then paused to regroup, and Bate strengthened his ridge with abatis and headlogs.
    Units: US Johnson's 1st Div, XIV Corps (15th & 18th U.S.). CS Bate's div 452
  3. Aug 6, 8:30 a.m.Cox's division, with Reilly's and Byrd's brigades leading, crossed the Sandtown road and attacked south into the wooded, fortified ridge held by Lewis's Kentucky 'Orphan Brigade' and Tyler's Tennessee brigade. Among the first units to meet were the Federal 11th Kentucky and the Confederate 4th Kentucky. Two attacks failed at close range, and the 8th Tennessee (US) and 123rd Indiana lost their colors.
    Units: US Cox's 3rd Div, XXIII Corps (Reilly's, Byrd's bdes; 11th Ky., 8th Tenn., 123rd Ind.). CS Bate's div (Lewis's 'Orphan' bde incl. 4th Ky.; Tyler's bde) 678
  4. Aug 6, 11:30 a.m.Hascall's division, with Strickland's and Swayne's brigades and the 25th Michigan out as skirmishers, crossed South Utoy Creek against Armstrong's dismounted Mississippi cavalry brigade and two guns. It pushed them back a short way but no farther. The 2016 marker gives Hascall about 150 casualties and says the 25th Michigan's colors were lost and recovered on Aug 7.
Units: US Hascall's 2nd Div, XXIII Corps (Strickland's, Swayne's bdes; 25th Mich.). CS Armstrong's cavalry bde (dismounted), two guns 97
  5. Aug 6, late afternoon to about 6 p.m.A supporting attack by one XIV Corps division 'ended almost before it began', and the attacks were called off in a torrential rain. Threatened on his left from the Cascade Springs direction, Bate was ordered back east to the main line.
Units: US XIV Corps (one div). CS Bate's div 7106
  6. Aug 7The Federals advanced to the Confederate main line, found it 'strongly fortified and protected by abatis', and entrenched; the XIV Corps lost nearly 200 in probing attacks. The front settled along the exterior line toward East Point until Aug 25. Sherman called it 'a noisy but not a bloody battle.'
    Units: US XIV & XXIII Corps. CS Hardee's & Lee's corps 5211
  7. resultReilly's brigade lost 306 (76 killed, 199 wounded, 31 captured) against 15–20 in Bate's command. Estimates of Union losses for the operation range from 400 (NPS) to nearly 1,000 (ABT, Aug 4–7); the 2016 marker's 850 for Cox's division is high.
