Atlanta Medical College (1854)
Atlanta Medical College, the earliest forerunner of Emory's School of Medicine, was founded in 1854 with John G. Westmoreland as first dean. Its first building opened in 1856.
The record
Emory's timeline places the 1856 building at the corner of Butler Street (now Jesse Hill Jr. Drive) and Jenkins Street (now Armstrong Street). The school split and merged twice before taking its present name in 1915. The same year, 1854, thirteen Atlanta physicians organized the Brotherhood of Physicians, forerunner of the Fulton County Medical Society (GHS Academy of Medicine marker).
Today: Grady/Georgia State area east of downtown.
