Decatur-Augusta and Lawrenceville-McDonough roads at Lithonia
By the 1830s the Lawrenceville-McDonough road (north-south) crossed the Decatur-Augusta road (east-west) here, and the farm community at the junction was called Crossroads, later Lithonia.
The record
The Lithonia Historic District nomination says settlers claimed land along former Indian trails and the old post road between Decatur and Augusta. The Georgia Railroad was laid along the path of the east-west road on its ridge and reached Crossroads in 1845, when a post office opened there. The town's main streets still center on the old crossroads. The nomination does not name a modern road for the Lawrenceville-McDonough route.
Today: Main St and the CSX line in Lithonia.
Where on the map: Decatur-Augusta road: east-west along the ridge later used by the Georgia Railroad (CSX) through Lithonia. Lawrenceville-McDonough road: north-south through the crossroads (modern equivalents not identified in the nomination).
