Old Cross Keys

An antebellum crossroads settlement and post office, with James Reeve (1792-1852) as postmaster and merchant. After the post office moved east, this spot was called Old Cross Keys.

The record

The GHS marker says the Cross Keys post office was moved, with its name, to a point between Chamblee and Doraville before 1864, so Federal dispatches and maps that year called the first site Old Cross Keys. On July 18, 1864, columns of the Federal 16th and 23rd corps briefly met here on the way to Decatur. The marker gives no founding date for the settlement beyond calling it ante-bellum.
