Peachtree Trail

The trail that gave Peachtree its name ran from Buzzard Roost up the river to Standing Peachtree, then east along today's Moores Mill Road to Buckhead and northeast along the ridge toward Hog Mountain.

The record

The 1955 GHS marker traces 'the ancient trail: Buzzard Roost (mouth of Utoy Cr.) to Standing Peach Tree & via Moore's Mill Rd., to Buckhead - thence N.E. on Hog Mtn. Ridge,' and says the Hog Mountain section, prolonged south to Atlanta, became Peachtree Road. A second 'Peachtree Trail' marker, on GA 293 in Kennesaw, describes a route from the heart of the Cherokee Nation to Standing Peachtree; pioneers crossing at Montgomery's Ferry called it the Peachtree or Montgomery Ferry Road, and it later became the Dixie Highway and U.S. 41. The DeKalb History Center describes the trail as lying under today's Peachtree Road and Street. No survey of the actual trail bed exists.

Today: Moores Mill Rd and Peachtree Rd follow parts of the general route (GHS).

Where on the map: Along the Chattahoochee from near the mouth of Utoy Creek (Buzzard Roost) north to the mouth of Peachtree Creek (Standing Peachtree); east via Moores Mill Rd NW to Buckhead; northeast along the Peachtree Rd ridge through Brookhaven and Chamblee toward Hog Mountain (Gwinnett). A northwest branch across the river ran roughly along US 41 toward the Cherokee towns.
