Samuel House plantation house (1857)
A large brick plantation house built in 1857 by Samuel House (1798-1873). Sherman made it his headquarters on July 18, 1864.
The record
The state marker (044-10) dates the house to 1857, and the DeKalb History Center to about 1858, saying it was built of bricks handmade from native clay. The marker says Sherman joined Schofield here on July 18, 1864, and set up headquarters in the house, and that Cox's Federal division camped on the plantation. The house survives as the clubhouse of the private Peachtree Golf Club at 4600 Peachtree Road. The sources consulted do not describe the people enslaved there.
Today: The house survives as the clubhouse of the private Peachtree Golf Club, off Peachtree Rd in Brookhaven.
