Sandtown Road stage route and Utoy post office
The road west from Decatur through Marthasville and White Hall to Sandtown on the Chattahoochee carried a stagecoach line. The Utoy post office opened on it in March 1836 and closed in 1866.
The record
The GHS Sandtown marker says a post office opened at Sandtown, 'this focal point on the old stage route,' on September 2, 1828. The Utoy marker lists the stops as Decatur, Marthasville (Atlanta), White Hall and Sandtown. The road followed the older Sandtown Trail in part; Cascade Road is among the modern roads said to follow that trail. Federal troops camped at the Utoy post office site in August 1864.
Today: Cascade Rd corridor in southwest Atlanta.
Where on the map: Decatur -> Marthasville/Atlanta -> White Hall (West End) -> west along the Utoy-Camp Creek divide (Cascade Rd corridor, 'Old Sandtown Rd') -> Sandtown on the Chattahoochee, just southwest of the map.
