Sardis Methodist Church and cemetery

Congregational tradition dates Sardis to 1812, before the 1821 cession, which would make it older than the counties around it. Marked graves in its cemetery date from the 1830s.

The record

The 1957 GHS marker says the church stands on land 'taken from the Indians' by Sy Donaldson before the survey and that it is 'believed to date from 1812'; that claim is traditional and unverified. It was on a preaching circuit every two weeks, and four buildings have stood on the site, the present one from the 1920s. The church and cemetery were listed on the National Register in 2012.
