Shallowford Trail and Road
A north-south trail through Decatur to the Shallow Ford of the Chattahoochee near Roswell. In 1864 Clairmont Road was still called the old Shallow Ford Road.
The record
The Baron DeKalb Chapter, DAR, marked the route in 1928 with a stone reading 'Shallow Ford Indian Trail to Roswell' on Clairmont Road. GHS markers describe Federal troops in July 1864 marching 'via Old Shallow Ford Rd. (Clairmont)' and moving south on the 'old Shallow Ford rd.' from Roswell toward Decatur. An online compilation places the trail along today's Candler, Clairmont and Shallowford roads, starting from the Flat Shoals and Indian Springs country. The Shallow Ford was also where the 1821 treaty line left the river.
Today: Clairmont Rd and Shallowford Rd; the DAR stone stands on Clairmont Rd.
Where on the map: From the Flat Shoals area north on Candler Rd to Decatur; Clairmont Rd north; Shallowford Rd through the Chamblee-Dunwoody area; to the Shallow Ford on the Chattahoochee near Roswell.
