Solomon Goodwin house (1831)
A log house on Peachtree Road in Brookhaven, said to have been built about 1831 by Solomon Goodwin (c. 1780-1850) and called by a 1954 state marker the oldest house in DeKalb County. It was dismantled in 2016 and its logs put in storage.
The record
The 1954 state marker (044-12) says the house on the adjacent knoll was built in 1831 by Solomon Goodwin and calls it the oldest extant house in DeKalb County. The DeKalb History Center is more cautious: it says the house was 'said to have been built by Solomon Goodwin about 1831' but may have been built by his son John Harris Goodwin or by John Dobbs, and that it had been moved; Rough Draft Atlanta reported in 2019 that the family never determined who built it. The marker notes that on July 18, 1864, Hascall's Federal division turned southeast here toward Decatur. In November 2016 the house, then at 3931 Peachtree Road, was taken apart piece by piece and the logs stored for possible rebuilding elsewhere. It was never listed on the National Register.
Today: Dismantled in November 2016. It last stood at 3931 Peachtree Rd, Brookhaven, after at least one earlier move.
