Stone Mountain
The granite dome drew people for some 9,000 years. Trails made it a meeting place for Creek and Cherokee people before white settlement.
The record
The New Georgia Encyclopedia says archaeological evidence shows Early Archaic people first visited the mountain about 9,000 years ago, and that its trail connections later made it an important meeting place for Creek and Cherokee people. Europeans, probably English traders and slave raiders, reached it in the late seventeenth century. The 1821 Treaty of Indian Springs ceded the land around it; whites had settled its base by the late 1820s, and by 1850 it drew sightseers. The Stone Mountain Historical Society dates the first granite quarrying to 1845-50.
