1906 race massacre: the police raid on Brownsville
Two days into the violence, police raided Brownsville, a Black community about two miles south of downtown that was home to Clark College and Gammon Theological Seminary. An officer was killed in the shootout.
The record
Black residents of Brownsville had armed themselves after the attacks downtown. When police learned of the gathering they feared a counterattack and raided the community, and an officer was killed in the exchange of fire (NGE). The raid carried the violence two miles south of downtown, into a Black suburb built around its colleges.
