Flat Rock
One of the oldest African American settlements in DeKalb County. Freed people who stayed on the land after 1865 built their own schools, churches and civic groups, and the community lived through the Black Codes, Jim Crow and the Great Migration.
The record
Before the war the area held farms and plantations worked by enslaved people. After 1865 freed people built the tight-knit Flat Rock community. In 2005 Rev. T. A. Bryant Jr. and Zudia Guthrie donated T. A. Bryant Sr.'s house to hold the community's records. It opened in December 2006 as the Flat Rock Archives, which preserves rural African American history and includes the Flat Rock African American Historic Cemetery (Wikipedia).
Today: The Flat Rock Archives museum in the city of Stonecrest, inside the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area.
