Grady Homes (1942), built for Black families
A 495-unit project for Black families beside Sweet Auburn and Grady Hospital, completed in 1942.
The record
Grady Homes was one of four Black projects in the Housing Authority's 1939–1940s program, with John Hope, Eagan and Herndon Homes (Atlanta Housing). It opened in 1942 with 495 units for Black families (Wikipedia). Bayor argues that the siting of public housing helped shape the city's racial geography. The Housing Authority kept separate white and Black application offices until 1968, even after official desegregation in 1962.
Today: Demolished and replaced by the mixed-income Auburn Pointe.
