Lynwood Park, Brookhaven
A historically African American neighborhood of wood and cinderblock homes north of Windsor Parkway. Regional planners mapped it as an 'existing colored area', and since the 1990s it has largely given way to new, larger houses.
The record
A regional planning map in GSU's Planning Atlanta collection, titled 'Negro Areas for Early Consideration: Lynwood Park', shows the neighborhood's 'existing colored areas' and 'suggested expansion areas' (GSU layer atlpp0206_92a). Wikipedia describes Lynwood Park as historically African American and notes new craftsman-style homes built by buyers seeking a close-in location. Atlanta Magazine (2016) says the community was largely lost to gentrification and redevelopment from the 1990s, leaving three small mid-century Black churches.
Today: The City of Brookhaven's Lynwood Park, with its pool and recreation center, and the remaining churches among new homes.
Where on the map: North of Windsor Pkwy and east of the Sandy Springs line; see GSU layer atlpp0206_92a.
