The Klan's 'Imperial Palace' on Peachtree Road
From 1921 the Ku Klux Klan ran its national headquarters from a Greek Revival mansion on Peachtree Road that it called its 'Imperial Palace'. After foreclosure, the Catholic diocese bought the land in 1936 and built a cathedral there.
The record
The Klan grew nationally in the early 1920s under leadership based in Atlanta. The property was foreclosed by 1936, and the diocese bought it from the insurance company holding the mortgage for $35,000. The Cathedral of Christ the King was dedicated on January 18, 1939; Hiram Wesley Evans, the Klan's imperial wizard, attended the ceremony (Wikipedia).
Today: The Cathedral of Christ the King, at Peachtree Rd and Peachtree Way in Buckhead.
