Turner Field to Georgia State: Summerhill's latest remaking
The 1996 Olympic stadium became Turner Field, and Georgia State bought it and its lots in 2017. The parking fields that had separated Summerhill from downtown since 1965 are now being built over.
The record
After the Braves left following the 2016 season, Georgia State University acquired the ballpark and surrounding lots in January 2017. The stadium became its football stadium, now Center Parc Stadium, and the lots are being redeveloped with mixed-use buildings (Wikipedia). The land is the old Washington-Rawson renewal area. Its paving also affected the neighborhood's flooding: a city official said after the 2012 floods that the combined sewer 'wasn't designed to handle the upstream areas being completely impervious'. The city built a five-million-gallon stormwater tank under the Turner Field media lot in 2013–14.
Today: Center Parc Stadium, the Georgia State Convocation Center, and new housing and retail on the former lots.
