Westview Cemetery's Rest Haven section
West View Cemetery opened in 1884 with a separate African American section, Rest Haven. It formally ended segregation in its main grounds only in 1970.
The record
When West View opened in 1884 it had its main white sections, the African American section called Rest Haven, and God's Acre, a pauper section the city used until 1925. Atlanta University's president Edmund Asa Ware was buried in 1885 in a plot straddling the white and Black sections; his body was moved to a memorial on the AU campus nine years later. The cemetery officially ended segregation within its main grounds in 1970.
