Custer Avenue CSO facility and East Area tunnel
The overflow facility where Intrenchment Creek's combined sewers discharge, built in the mid-1980s and backed since 2008 by a 1.8-mile storage tunnel.
The record
Intrenchment Creek rises under downtown and flows south through Peoplestown, Summerhill and Mechanicsville, communities the South River Watershed Alliance says still see flooding and sewer spills. Wikipedia calls it the last South River tributary still affected by Atlanta's combined sewers. The Custer Avenue facility (780 Custer Ave SE / 855 Sloan Circle) dates from the mid-1980s East Area combined sewer system. The East Area tunnel is 1.8 miles long and 25 feet across, with a 115-foot shaft and 44 million gallons of storage (city auditor, 2014). SRWA reports a new storage vault of 12-24 million gallons under construction, estimated at $156.5 million.
