Battle of Decatur
What happened
Wheeler's cavalry, dismounted and deployed south of the Georgia Railroad, attacked Sprague's brigade guarding McPherson's wagon trains parked north of the square. Sprague and sections of the Chicago Board of Trade and Michigan batteries fell back through the courthouse square, where the fighting was hot, and then withdrew with the trains to the North Decatur road. Wheeler, ordered back to Hardee, did not pursue; Sprague later received the Medal of Honor for saving the trains.
