Counterattack restores the XV Corps line
What happened
Sherman, Howard and Schofield had command posts at the Augustus Hurt house, and Sherman brought artillery to bear on the break. Woods's division struck Manigault's flank from Copenhill while Lightburn and Martin, joined by Mersy's XVI Corps brigade, counterattacked; the line and DeGress's spiked guns were retaken and Baker's Alabama brigade withdrew. Fighting at Leggett's Hill went on until dark.
