Augustus Hurt plantation house (1858)
Augustus F. Hurt (1830-1921) built his plantation house on this hill in 1858. Federal forces razed it in 1864.
The record
The GHS marker says the Official Records wrongly called it the Howard house. On July 22, 1864, Sherman, Howard and Schofield kept command posts here during the Battle of Atlanta. The marker does not describe the plantation's enslaved workers.
Today: Copenhill area near the Carter Center.
