See it on the map All Civil War records

What happened

Riding ahead to reconnoiter near the upper end of Terry's mill pond, Maj. Gen. W.H.T. Walker was shot from his horse by a Federal picket, and Hugh Mercer took his division into the Sugar Creek valley. Bate's division crossed the pond margin under artillery fire and swung west against Rice's brigade on the hill at today's Murphy High School and along the old Clay Rd. Dodge's XVI Corps, caught on the march, faced south and threw both divisions back.
