Bate's division crosses Terry's mill pond
Shifting east of Sugar Creek, Lewis's Kentucky 'Orphan Brigade' and part of Tyler's brigade came under random artillery fire as they crossed the upper end of the mill pond and its swampy margin.
The record
Bate's and Walker's divisions had come up the Sugar Creek valley west of the pond. Bate then realigned east of the creek and advanced north through woods into Dodge's XVI Corps. Artillery fire from the north landed among troops crossing the pond margin, so shell fragments and canister are possible along the old pond bed. Much of the pond bed lies under I-20 and development.
