What happened

Hood sent Lee's corps out the Lick Skillet road to stop Howard's swing around the west side, with Stewart's corps following. Accounts differ on whether Hood ordered an attack or only a blocking position, but Lee attacked at once. Brown's division hit Logan's refused right and Clayton's brigades struck Harrow's salient at Laurel and Archer. Walthall's division renewed the attack over Brown's ground about 2:30; Stewart and Loring were wounded, and by 10 p.m. Hood had pulled the troops back to Atlanta.
