What happened

Stewart's corps and the Georgia militia marched out the McDonough road from about 5 p.m.; the commissary was thrown open to civilians and remaining guns were spiked. Ferguson's cavalry and the militia then wrecked five locomotives and burned an ordnance train of about 80 cars by the rolling mill. Twenty-eight of the cars were full of ammunition, and Sherman at Jonesboro claimed to have heard the blasts.
