The record

The Georgia Railroad freight depot here is a replacement completed in April 1869; the 1864 depot was destroyed. Houses and churches were not targets, but some burned anyway, and many had already been dismantled by both armies for fortifications. The share of the city destroyed is disputed: 25% (Hitchcock) and 37% (Poe) against 92% (Confederate Gen. W.P. Howard). The GHS marker says 40%. Heavily rebuilt downtown ground.
