The Car Shed (State Depot / Union Passenger Depot)

Atlanta's passenger depot, 'the Car Shed', stood in the railroad gulch between today's Central Ave and Pryor St. Poe's engineers destroyed it before the March to the Sea.

The record

The Western & Atlantic's zero mile post marked the terminus, with the State Depot 'between here and what is now Pryor Street'. In November Sherman ordered 'all depots, car-houses, shops, factories, foundries' destroyed, and Poe's troops burned the buildings and knocked down the walls. The site is now the Underground Atlanta area and the railroad gulch; it has been rebuilt many times.
