The errant column (Morgan's march)

Davis's XIV Corps division, led by J.D. Morgan, was sent on a wide march west to come in on Logan's right by the Lick Skillet road, and got lost.

The record

Expecting an attack on the XV Corps' right west of Ezra Church, Sherman sent the division toward the Chattahoochee to reach Lick Skillet (Adamsville) by a side road. Without maps or guides it wandered through forest and swamp until stopped by Confederate cavalry and ordered back. Logan held on without it, helped by 12 regiments of the XVI and XVII Corps from their line along Chappell Rd. A lost division on the march leaves only a thin, scattered trail.
