The divide along DeKalb Avenue

East of downtown the Eastern Continental Divide follows the ridge carried by DeKalb Avenue and the rail line: rain north of it runs to the Chattahoochee and the Gulf, rain south of it to the Ocmulgee and the Atlantic. A 350-foot mural marks it at Lake Claire.

The record

Rough Draft Atlanta describes David Fichter's 'Native Waters' mural, commissioned about 2007 by Lake Claire Neighbors on a DeKalb Avenue retaining wall between Arizona and Connecticut avenues near the Edgewood/Candler Park MARTA station, which shows both basins from north Georgia to the sea. Atlanta Buildings lists towns on or near the divide (Jonesboro, Morrow, Hapeville, East Point, Atlanta, Decatur, Clarkston, Tucker, Norcross) and notes that old roads and railroads often ride it. In USGS NHD mapping, Lullwater Creek rises just north of here and runs to Peachtree Creek, while Sugar Creek rises a short way southwest, below DeKalb Avenue, and runs to the South River.
