What happened

McPherson had been at lunch near the railroad at today's Whiteford Ave when the firing began. He watched the XVI Corps fight from a rise on today's Memorial Dr, then rode south on a road through the pines toward the XVII Corps' left. Skirmishers of Smith's Texas brigade called on him to surrender; he turned to escape and was shot. The 64th Illinois (Morrill's brigade) drove them back long enough to recover his body, which was carried to the Augustus Hurt house.
