Morrill's brigade and the recovery of McPherson's body

The record

Morrill's four regiments, in reserve near Leggett's Hill, were deployed southeast to meet Walker's (Mercer's) division coming up the Sugar Creek valley. When Cleburne's brigades broke through the XVII Corps line to the west, they hit Morrill's right, forcing repeated changes of front and finally a withdrawal to a line east of Leggett's Hill. The 64th Illinois drove the Confederates back long enough to recover McPherson's body from the woods. The area is private residential land.
